There are between 16 and 20 species of Miltonopsis and also many hybrids. They are a South American orchid with colourful flowers often referred to as “pansy orchids” as the outstanding feature is the large flat lip.
Miltonopsis have pseudo bulbs from which the leaves extend. The flower spike emerges from between the leaves and may have several four inch flowers on each stem. New shoots emerge from the side of the existing pseudo bulbs and forms new growth. There may be more than one instance of new growth; so the plant expands as it matures. Care must be taken when watering not to allow any water to remain on the new growths. These are not the easiest orchids to keep alive.
